What day is it?

Filed under: General — admin @ 8:48 pm

Seriously, that 3-day weekend really screwed me up! I didn’t even bother writing out a new to-do list this weekend because there was so much left from last time I just didn’t see the point. I was so tired that I managed to sleep through 2 hours of alarm blaring and 4 phone calls from the office on Wednesday morning (enough to where Mom came to my apartment to make sure I wasn’t dead. I woke up and called the office just after she’d left… sigh… still getting teased about that one). And this weekend is first ever Con (Wrath of…) and I think I should be a bit more excited. Must be the exhaustion. Oh, and I haven’t blogged in a week. Granted, the articles and comics all got done, but that seems like _all_ I’ve been getting done lately. I could use a break but there really isn’t one in sight for the next month or so but, well, a girl can hope.

The nap helped…

Filed under: Art, creativity, webcomic — admin @ 11:59 pm

You’d figure it should after 3 hours of snoozin ;-)

The productivity level was pretty low, honestly, but it’s okay since I took care of this week’s comics already I could afford the nap. Instead I got some measuring done for another project that was on the list (it’s half of one to-do) and, well, not much else. Seriously, I needed the downtime.

Tomorrow, though, I’ll draft and article, do the other half of tonight’s project, and maybe have time to compose the flyers for next weekend’s con. I finally have all 4 comic excerpts picked, so now just to lay them out and make a hardcopy. See, no worries :)

I amputated the comic!

Filed under: webcomic — admin @ 11:19 pm

Sigh… obviously I was too tired to be let loose around my work with a sharp object. I wasn’t paying enough attention as I trimmed down the bristol and whoosh! there went an extra 1/2″ off an already trimmed side. Oh, well, the good news is that it was totally fixable and I really don’t think it’s noticeable in the scan. The better news is that all three comics for this week are uploaded and scheduled. That is how it should be every week, if not before.

I go bed now.

Time for the Self-Tanner again…

Filed under: Art, creativity, eHow, travel, webcomic, work — admin @ 11:31 pm

So, Wrath of Con is weekend after next and it’s being held in Panama City. Even though I’m really not much of an ocean person and am in no hurry to don that bathing suit I bought last week (doesn’t hurt to be prepared) still, I like the idea of keeping my options open. And since we’ll be right there on the beach, might as well not glow if I DO wear that suit.

In other news. I wore some fun new earrings today that I made totally out of the blue yesterday. They started as an example for an eHow article and then the wire just started talking to me, urging me to stitch into here and there and suddenly i had a really interesting shape. I’ll be including the pattern as part of the article but they were really fun and quick to make. I plan on experimenting with different wire and bead combos and seeing what else I can do with it, when I get the time.

And speaking of time, mine was spent quite wisely today. Not only did I kick butt at work, just getting stuff done right and left, but I managed to get a ton of work done on the comic tonight so that I should have this week’s comics done by tomorrow night. Which is how it should be. I really didn’t like having to work every night before it was set to upload just to keep up. That’s why I really want that buffer built up! Of course, with the other projects I’ve got, an actual buffer might take a little while, but at least I’m on the right track.

Weekend Wrap-Up

Filed under: General — admin @ 10:32 pm

Another busy week but not exactly busy enough. The to-do list only saw 50% completion.

Comic: 4 out of 4
Articles: 3 out of 3
House: 1 out of 4
Websites: 0 out of 6
Book: 1 out of 1

Exercise: 4 out of 7 days

Obviously the website work is the red-headed step child of all of my tasks, but it’s also the one with the most flexible deadlines (or none at all) so I suppose it’s understandable. And the house stuff is not the usual stuff, it’s more special once in a while things that I want to get to but life won’t stop if I don’t.

I have to say, I’m really looking forward to next weekend. Last year Memorial Day was incredibly productive for me and I’m hoping to repeat that sort of success. Technically my to-do list’s period ends on Saturday so it won’t really affect the 18 items once again facing me. But next week? Next week should rock!

I give it 3 Bibs!

Filed under: food — admin @ 9:43 pm

Spectrum and I went to Monk’s Bar and Grill tonight for dinner. For those here in town, it’s what is now in the old Main Ingredient location. It’s certainly different. It’s darker in there, the front room at least is devoid of a big screen tv (a fear with that bar & grill moniker) and it’s even more casual than MI was. The menu is pretty big but contains mostly burgers and other sandwiches.

We both had burgers. I, the Stilton (blue cheese and apples) and Spec the Gator Hater (bacon, horseradish mayo, red onions). Both were big, good, and messy :) You get a choice of sides (celery & carrots with dressing, fruit, French fries, chips and salsa or pasta salad).

Spec had the fruit (honeydew and cantaloupe with maybe some grapes) and I had the pasta salad (too much oregano, could have used a little more salt; there was shaved Parmesan on top but I think it would have helped to have that mixed in with the salad ahead of time to get the cheese time to impart some saltiness to the dish, effectively warming up the dish without heat). Portions were good and the check came in under $20 before tip.

Not exactly my new favoritest place in the world, but definitely good for a burger fix and better than fast food.

Never trust a good hair day…

Filed under: eHow, webcomic, work, writing — admin @ 11:51 pm

It’s merely the Universe’s way of apologizing, in advance, for everything else that’s going to happen.

Actually, my day wasn’t all that bad, I just managed to get two stains on my shirt (one I still don’t know how it happened, I just looked down and there was this splotch of something) so it went from ‘my hair looks so good it’s too bad I’m only going to work’ to ‘thank goodness I’m going straight home.’ I mean, we’re talking the accidental hair perfection that usually only happens the day you’re scheduled to have it cut! You know what I’m talking about…

Anyway. Finished up my 3rd eHow article tonight and have tomorrow’s comic ready to go. Friday’s still needs a lot of work, but it’s all still doable. I’ve been taking the strips to work to ink during lunch and the first day was a little tense (I kept thinking someone was going to come in and start looking over my shoulder or asking questions and I really wasn’t ready to be _that_ public to my workmates–most of whom are not comic people) but today was a bit better. I generally get the lettering and main lines in, which just leaves detailing for after supper. Still need to work on that buffer, though.

For the Love of Chapter Breaks

Filed under: Art, Rants, reading — admin @ 11:32 pm

So, last night I headed to bed after staring at a computer screen for the majority of the day and chose to read something other than my usual non-fiction before turning off the light. Having just picked up The Plain Janes at the bookstore I cracked the spine and dug right in.

An hour later I’d finished the book. Now, that’s generally not such a bad thing but when you started reading at midnight, that hour is a precious commodity! The reason I read the entire thing in one sitting? Wasn’t because it was a good read (though it was) it was because there were no chapter breaks. There are also no page numbers–it’s like the graphic novel version of Vegas: no windows, no clocks.

This is something I’ve noticed with a few graphic novels or compilations, omnibuses, etc. : it just goes on and on and on.

Now, The Plain Janes–by my count–comes in at 144 pages, and the pages are only half sized so it’s not horribly long, but I would have enjoyed a chance to blink, an opportunity to look over at the clock, realize how late it was, and save the rest for another night. I would have liked the choice.

I tried to figure out why an editor would let a book go out without such things as page numbers or chapter breaks. Obviously it’s a style issue on the page numbers, but what about the chapter breaks? Novels have chapters, sometimes chapters within “books” or acts that further break up the flow. Oh, maybe that’s it? Maybe the editor or artist does not want to break up the flow of his or her mater work. But, see, breaks can be used so incredibly well that a chapter break at the right time can serve as a cliff hanger. They also give the mind a chance to pause and digest what it’s consumed in the previous pages, so breaking the flow should not be a reason.

And not all graphic novels do this. Those that are more trade paperbacks frequently contain their title pages or something like that and it serves a similar purpose. Having also recently started Jane’s World, Collection 1, I was overjoyed to see actual chapters. Watchmen has chapters and even V for Vendetta had a sort of in-line chapter system going on. But Strangers in Paradise? Nope. And that’s almost 350 pages! (Granted, in Book 1, at least, there were gear changes with Katchoo’s poetry, etc. that almost served as chapter breaks, but it’s a tenuous connections at best.)

Then I wondered, maybe graphic novels are trying to be more individual, less like the novels that share part of their name. But, well, I don’t think that’s a good idea, either since–love or hate the name–graphic novels are still struggling for credibility in a lot of genres. If you want to appeal to prose readers who may not think about or think highly of the comic book style, the last thing you want to do is alienate them by ignoring basic stylistic conventions that can build a bridge between the familiar and unfamiliar.

Finally, I wondered if it was a ploy to keep the reader from putting the book down at all. I suppose insecurity could lead an artist to want to force the reader to sit through an entire reading all at once but this insecurity needs to be examined. It’s tough for me to stop reading a good book even with chapter breaks but it is sometimes necessary to pause for one reason or another. If the reader is not compelled to pick up the book again, it’s not the fault of the chapter break.

Basically, after all of this thought, it is my opinion (and I may be in the minority here, but it’s okay) that graphic novels, compilations, etc. should make use of chapter breaks if they are, say, 50 pages or more. Every story has a beginning, a middle and an end, so diving the story at least this simply should not be a difficult thing. Don’t hold your readers hostage, give them a choice and have a little faith in your story.

Forced March

Filed under: Art, eHow, exercise, food, shopping, webcomic, work, writing — admin @ 11:58 pm

Or would that be May? I always get those two confused ;-)

Anyway, I debated with myself for about an hour about whether I was going to go to the grocery store today or tomorrow. I didn’t actually NEED the groceries until tomorrow evening but I knew I wouldn’t want to deal with the store PLUS cooking tomorrow night so I resigned myself the tackling the list today. And as a reward for not killing half the people in that store for being absolute imbeciles, I had dessert before dinner.

But really it’s been a productive evening. I finalized another article, started on the pictures for the third of the month (due Thursday, so I’m actually on track to not panic) and pencilled Wednesday’s comic in full and paneled and lettered Thursday and Friday. I even did penance for that dessert on the stationery bike. Not a bad evening. If I keep it up for the next two nights I’ll be able to start getting ahead by this weekend (wouldn’t that be freaking awesome!).

Week in Review

Looking at the to-do list I started the week with is a bit depressing, to be honest. I was able to cross off almost half of what I _did_ get done last night and this morning. Sigh…

Tasks accomplished 8.6 of 17 (some lines have multiple parts, hence the .6)
*Comics 4 out of 4
*Articles 1.6 out of 3
*House 0 out of 4
*Websites 2 out of 5
*Book 1 out of 1

Exercise (not included in to-do list count) 3 out of 7 days

Granted, I still have time today to complete a few more bits of the article list but technically I made that list on Sunday of last weekend, so the week is already up. Time to transcribe what’s left to this week’s list along with the new goals and hope that I manage to juggle things better this time around.

Away from the numbers it looks a little different. I spent quality time with my boyfriend and Mom, accomplished my first w-t-f update schedule with Random Acts…, made a boatload of banners to prepare for advertising said strip, scripted an entire month of RA strips, fought with the comicpress themes for several days, and managed to renew talks on a new opportunity for the webcomic. So what if i did pretty much nothing on the household chores? All in all, I think it counts as a success.

And Up Again!

Filed under: General — admin @ 11:20 pm

I don’t want to jinx it by making any sort of public announcement, but I’m really jazzed about a potential opportunity with the comic that is on the horizon. A lot of work to do before it actually happens but even the possibility it just too cool right now!

Anyway, crazy busy at work and home both. My to-do list is very light on the red cross-outs that show progress on the mammoth list. Sigh… But it’s okay, I still have two more days (both pretty busy themselves) before the week is truly over, and a third if I count Sunday. GOtta get that list whittled down and get ahead on some projects before I drown in the cluttered apartment and the stack of things to do.

My Boyfriend Can Cook!

Filed under: Relationships, awwwww, food — admin @ 11:57 pm

And, apparently, even enjoys it! This is so incredibly novel to me, lol. For those who are unaware, I am a trained chef so it’s somewhat understandable that I’m the cooking one of any given pair. But it should also be noted that both the ex-husbands were non-cooks. Sure, they could feed themselves when they had to (and one was a part-time dad so had to feed him and his son every other week) but they were one-trick-ponies when it came to something that didn’t require a box or bag. So, while I tend to try to avoid comparing one guy to any of the others in my past point-to-point, it still remains a very cool thing that Spectrum cooked dinner for me tonight and enjoyed it as much as I enjoy cooking for him. Just very cool, indeed.

Sleepy Tuesday

Filed under: General — admin @ 11:09 pm

Not sure what was really going on but I just couldn’t get with it, today. I fought sleep constantly. Granted, I think it had a lot to do with the fact that I wasn’t able to shower this morning. Apparently there has been a water main leak during the day, yesterday, that resulted in decreased water pressure to the complex. So things ran slow, but they still ran. Except there wasn’t enough pressure to power the shower and I had to substitute a bath this morning. Dude. I think there’s seriously something to my theory that kinetic energy from the rushing water of a shower jet translates to an energetic day.

Ended up taking a “late lunch” at 4:15 and coming home early to sleep for a couple of hours. Usually naps just make things worse but I had no choice. And, surprisingly, today it worked just right. I got up at 7:30pm (had to check to make sure it was still night and not the next morning), finished up tomorrows comic and then started on Thursdays. I really need to build up that buffer!

Spec asked me to come over for dinner tomorrow night–he’s gonna cook for me! Better get some more beauty rest so I’m not all sleepy and cranky after work :)

Ups and Downs

Filed under: meh — admin @ 11:31 pm

Didn’t want to get up this morning, only wanted to lay back down. Stacks of work fluctuated on my desk (because I didn’t give in to the stay home desire) and the to do list certainly isn’t taking any major leaps. Emotions went up up UP as a prospect loomed on the horizon and then kind of faltered a bit when things didn’t go as planned. Might be back to the back-burner but it’s a little hotter at any rate. And my gills are still a little green as I wrap up an article draft and rule out the next comic.

Catching up!

Filed under: SCA, birthday!, creativity, eHow, friends, social life, tv, web stuff, webcomic, work, writing — admin @ 10:32 pm

So! The birthday was wonderfully low-key and surprisingly perfect. Spec and I had lunch at the park with the obligatory feeding of the ducks, followed by various shopping and then dinner with the family and Palmie. Afterwards, Palmie came over and played Disney Scene It (a birthday gift from Spec) and we watched a movie. As such, not much got done on the comic site revamp, but that’s okay, the comic went up as scheduled.

Thursday it was back to work, sluggishly, and then squeezing in Friday’s comic before and after the SCA meeting. Once again, it got done, but I really need to start working and working ahead now that I’ve got to 3x per week. But at least I have until Tuesday night to upload the first one of the week.

This evening I started revamping the site’s logo but was gratefully interrupted by Spec’s arrival to watch tv and hang out. Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day in the morning, followed by an SCA event in the afternoon for me. In deference to the comic and the need to start on my articles for the month, not to mention finishing the banner recreation, I’ll only be going out for the afternoon and court. Sunday I’m supposed to meet up with Books who is in town for her baby shower (which I will miss) before she heads back down to Tampa. Busy weekend!
