Screeching Halt

Filed under: Art, food, medic!, television, webcomic, weight loss — admin @ 10:45 pm

Slightly hyperbolic, that, but it works. My appointment with the new gastro was today (or, well, his nurse practitioner, which is fine, I tend to see my primary’s ARNP more than him and prefer it that way) which led to blood work and x-rays and a repeat appointment (this time with the gastro himself) on the 27th. Of course, the nerves associated with seeing my 13th doctor in 6 years had me completely flushed and energy went down the tubes.

Still, I managed to get next week’s comics finished tonight so I officially have a week’s buffer for the moment. The plan will be to start the week after’s Sunday afternoon and continue until the month is complete. Then I can start on the extra content for the Year 1 book. So far, so good.

Made pork chops for probably the last time in a while tonight. See, even though my lowered carb diet was high in fiber and all sorts of healthy stuff, it also tended to contain red meat and pork. Even if it’s my thyroid exacerbating the cholesterol, that stuff probably wasn’t helping so I’m switching over to Menu Mailer’s Heart Healthy version. The up side, I suppose, is I get more whole grains worked into the mix (which I’d been pretty good about before), the down side being similar, lol. So far the first menu I’ve printed doesn’t depend on tofu, just lots of turkey, chicken, fish and cheese. Going to give this a shot for a few weeks and see if I can maintain the slow-but-steady weight loss using this menu. If not, it’s back to the Low-Carb but I’ll just substitute chicken or turkey for the pork and beef or something. Thus begins the experiment. But first, pizza tomorrow night with Spectrum and the new Friday shows :) (I totally intend to get the whole wheat crust, though, that’s got to count for something!)

Pretty Money

Filed under: Art, money, webcomic — Tags: — admin @ 11:58 pm

First things first: if your employer offers AFLAC as part of its benefits package and you haven’t enrolled: why the hell not? The coverage is generally inexpensive, the rates hardly ever change (even when plans change or are replaced, you are not forced to upgrade if you’re happy with the one you have) and it really does pay! It pays when you have certain annual screenings done (2-3 times most peoples co-pay) and pays when you miss work or have surgery. I just got the check for my gallbladder surgery/hospital stay and it totals 4 times the copay I paid. (and that copay was in the low 3 digits which means my benefit check is in the high 3 digits!) Seriously, folks, sign up!!!

And the progress update: next Tuesday’s strip is complete and Wednesday & Thursday will be done tomorrow. Depending on how long the street-lining takes (I’m trying to add depth with just lines and dots, streets get lots of very fine lines and next week involves cars so there’s a lot of street to cover) I may actually be able to get my first 2 eHow examples done tomorrow night as well! If not, it’ll be Saturday (Friday’s are saved, whenever possible, for R&R with Spectrum) and I’ll be in good shape for my first deadline. So far, so good, and that’s all I’m sayin’ …

Buffer ahead!

Filed under: Art — admin @ 11:48 pm

Holy smokes! Not only did I get this week’s comics completely finished by 8pm tonight but I’ve managed to get half of next week pencilled as well. I totally see a week’s buffer being created. And maybe double that after next week??? Time will tell.

Finally Some Productivity

Filed under: Art — admin @ 11:16 pm

And I’m not going to interrupt it for long for the sake of a blog post. Managed to get a boat load done for this week’s comics all tonight plus a quickie illustration for the Tuesday feature on martinis. Definitely a good day. Back to it!

Never Enough Hours

Filed under: Art, computer stuff, creativity, eHow, medic!, webcomic, weight loss, work, writing — admin @ 10:21 pm

especially when you feel like you’re running on empty in the hours you’ve got. Such has been the last several weeks.

After finding out the results of the liver biopsy tagged me for a rare genetic protein anomaly that leaves my liver and lungs vulnerable to damage (aren’t I lucky?) I go to Dr Z for the 6-month check in to find out my cholesterol and insulin are high and now my thyroid is, too. Joy. The alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency is still in question as to severity (waiting on appointments with the pulmo and a new gastro) but mainly will mean I get flu/pneumo vaccines each winter and more aggressive treatment for respiratory infections. The cholesterol might have more to do with the raising thyroid levels (right now I’m at subclinical hypothyrodism level) than my diet (which is already high-fiber/low-carb) though, as always, the goal is to loose weight and improve labs overall.

In other news! Work is good, not always as productive as I’d like, but some days are tougher than others. Just finished up another month of articles this weekend and have 6 of the required 7 titles planned for October. It’s been a year since the new contract and I was worried then that I’d run out of ideas. Thankfully that doesn’t seem to be much of a problem at this point, so as long as I can keep all irons in the fire that should still be going good. The comic went SWIMMINGLY this past month with the story that I’ve chose to call “A Fine Romance” that chronicled the first 3 months Spectrum and I dated. I’m sure there will have to be another installment in a few months, but for now I’m switching gears and hoping to use the time the next month’s updates will allow to work on the Year 1 book.

And still the ideas come. I have so much that I want to do, one of these days I hope to get a fraction of it started :)

Slow Progress is Still Progress

Filed under: Art, Relationships, movies, webcomic — admin @ 11:32 pm

And thank heavens for that. It seemed like it took forever to get started drawing tonight. In fact, the first panel of Wednesday’s strip took a full hour. But I’m really proud of some of the poses I managed to draw in the 2nd and 5th panels so it all balances out. Still working on Friday’s pencils but there’s several panels still virtually blank so they may spill over into tomorrow.

Now for something completely different. I’ve been sporadically exposing Spectrum to various movies he’s never watched before. This weekend is was Oscar! with Sylvester Stallone. I’m not really a Sly fan, but this movie makes me giggle whenever i see it. Last weekend it was Lemony Snickett’s a Series of Unfortunate Events, before that Coyote Ugly and before that Sugar and Spice. So far he’s found them all enjoyable and some (SnS, primarily) laugh-out-loud funny :) Granted, there are some movies I’d never ask him to watch (Clueless comes immediately to mind) but there are plenty of others I can mine for entertainment value.

Timing is Everything

Filed under: Art, Rants, medic!, organizing, webcomic — admin @ 11:20 pm

And last night I didn’t have it.

Well, I did, but it was all occupied by pencilling for over 6 hours straight. So that tells me that it takes just over 2 hours per page just to pencil. Tonight was all about the inking and I’m pretty much at 1.5 hours per page for that. So 3.5 hours per page (update) not including scripting (and let’s not get into the strange ordeal that turns into–you’d think it would be simple because, you know, I lived it and all, but not necessarily). Which isn’t all that bad, not really, and it tells me how much I’d need to carve out of my week if I wanted to start building that buffer again (though, as I told Spectrum, I don’t see that really happening anytime soon without a week’s vacation from the day job).

Anyway, have I done anything else other than the comic? Um, no… That’s why I’ll be drafting two articles tomorrow night to catch up with that and, then, probably spend Thursday before and after the meeting working on the WT script. Sure, that works… sorta.

Still no word from the doctor. They have through tomorrow before I have to get a little pushy. I realize that I’m not their only patient. I realize that at the time I was having my studies done, at least one if not two others were also having them done, and then however many repeats during the day. And I realize that there’s probably one, maybe two, doctors that review the studies (which is another peeve: the person going over the films is not the person I’ve talked to, knows nothing other than whatever my form says (which I didn’t get to write) so cares not one iota about my concerns… but anyway!) so it takes exponentially more time to get results. But just because there are other patients does not make my health, my issues, less important than anyone else, and 5-7 days is just rather ridiculous when you consider the ongoing issues it’s supposed to spot. Sigh… Whatever, I’ll eventually get the results and may actually have something to actually work on then. But the waiting sucks, okay?

Not much for a Monday

Work was… work. Not horrible, but it certainly didn’t fly by, either. Got a fair amount done, so all’s well. Of course, I was a leetle brain-dead at first when I spent however long trying to figure out what was missing on a bank rec, rechecking all the deposits and checks only to finally realize I hadn’t reset the beginning values on the form. Dur.

Once home, all I had to do was pencil this week’s strips. Distracted much? Yes, thank you. I think I should pay more attention to how much detail I’m expecting from each of the week’s strips to avoid what happened tonight: 3 days, 6 panels each, almost all fairly detailed. Oops! And it’s not that it’s incredibly difficult (a few were tedious from a perspective point of view–ba dum bump!) it’s just I was not totally on-task. Still, at this writing I’ve got two of the three days penciled and the third decently begun. Won’t have any trouble getting Wednesday’s ready for a timely update but it remains to be seen whether they all get inked tomorrow night or if they spill over into Wednesday. I hope not since I’ve got articles to finish up, but it will all get done, it always does.

Going to throw another 30 minutes at it before bed and see how far I can get.

oh! My girl didn’t win on Legally Blonde the Musical: Search for the Next Elle Woods. I was really pulling for the other girl, but, oh well. I’ve no doubt someone else will snap her up for something now that the show has finished.

Trade Off

Filed under: Art, SCA, apartment, webcomic, writing — admin @ 11:10 pm

It was a choice between the meeting, tonight, or productivity. Let’s face it: on meeting nights my time gets chopped up and I can’t find a rhythm. By the time I get home (and this would have likely been another long one) I’m usually wiped and/or flighty. So, knowing that I’m still constantly exhausted, had a headache, and still had work on two articles for the 15th, I opted for productivity, slow as it was.

Now I have two articles drafted, a third begun, a closet of clean towels and a tidied living and dining rooms. Not bad for having to bribe myself with several games of WordTwist in between the more ornery parts. Last night I started on an idea for some paper doll scenery and I think it’s going well. Got the basic shape and construction issues on paper, now for a few more details, ink, color, and the accessories which will go on a separate sheet. This is so much fun, I’m going to have to be careful not to get carried away with it :)

That plan didn’t include ignoring the blog

Filed under: Art, webcomic, writing — admin @ 11:58 pm

Last week just took twice as long to do everything as planned. But everything got done, so I suppose that’s all that matters. Trying to get back on my usual schedule this week and so far, so good. I have most of this week’s penciling done, one article drafted and two more pretty well-formed in my head. As long as I can keep up with things I should be in good shape. Hopefully I can get some of the additional content done for the Year 1 book worked on as well, this Fall is coming rather quickly, you know?

Apparently I took tonight off…

Filed under: Art, meh, money, opportunities, organizing, shopping, webcomic, work, writing — admin @ 11:01 pm

Not totally, of course, there was the scanning and the PhotoShop cleaning of the print pages which did get done. And all those grays I was erasing stray marks to be able to pick them up better? They totally dropped out anyway. Apparently 20% cool gray is ass for scanning. Oh well, just tweaked the levels and left them out. I was kinda worried how they’d print anyway so it’s probably just as well. If it’d been only a little uneven I just would have gone back over it with the airbrush to fix it. Oh, well, live and learn.

Other than that, nothing had really happened tonight. I had totally planned to start on this week’s strips tonight, at least getting pencils down but, well, no. Didn’t happen. And I’m not going to beat myself up over it, either. I can definitely get Wednesday’s up tomorrow night so there’s no crisis and after pushing myself so much these past couple of weeks I think a night off is not uncalled for.

Now about July… July is going to be a “chill” month for me. Of course I still have the comic and my eHow articles to do but here are some things I’m not going to be doing:
*taking on new projects
*scripting Act 2 of Wedding Tarot (it’ll wait til August)
*committing to new projects for future months
*throwing a party (it was a possibility, but no, I need the break)
etc.

I also plan to curb the superfluous spending for the month of July, kinda like a lifestyle detox. Of course, that just meant that I ordered the print gocco machine tonight rather than waiting on later this month, but I’ve been planning to order it for 2+ months now and it will actually be used for an article, at that. But enough excuses. Aside from things like gas and groceries and necessary art supplies it’s gonna be nix on the other frivolities. We’ll see how that goes ;-)

I hate drawing cars…

Filed under: Art — admin @ 11:16 pm

And now that the 8-pages all about cars is finished I can actually say that without jinxing the project! Now just to scan them at the office tomorrow and do (hopefully) a minimal amount of clean-up in photoshop before sending them off to the publisher. Hopefully they’ll be to his liking and I’ll know before long which publication they’ll be in and when! Whee!

Now it’s off to bed at a decent hour… finally.

Ouch!

Filed under: Art, SCA, apartment, birthday!, cleaning, creativity, medic!, webcomic — admin @ 10:48 pm

I think I sprained my toes. This is what comes of rushing from one room to another while simultaneously scanning comics and moving furniture to make way for the carpet cleaners that are coming tomorrow. I’d have been fine if that folding stool hadn’t been moved. But it was. And then were my toes. It’s not horrible, it’s just one of those things. And I think I’ll definitely be wearing flats tomorrow just in case.

Managed to get this week’s comics finished this evening in totality which is good because I really should spend some quality time on the print submission this week to get back on track for the July 1 due date plus draft the next article tomorrow night. Thursday is Mom’s birthday so that’ll be another SCA meeting missed in favor of the birthday dinner. (Note to self: call and order her birthday cake tomorrow!)

New Pretty

Filed under: Art, apartment, shopping, webcomic — admin @ 11:27 pm

So I engaged in a bit of retail therapy last week and I was really surprised that my ring from ice.com came in so soon. Isn’t it pretty? It’s almost too pretty, but not quite, lol.Smoky Quartz, Garnet and Tanzanite ring

Anyway, aside from admiring the new pretty I managed to get two of this week’s comics completed and the third about half-way there. Which is good because I need to pick up non essential items from the living room and dining room tomorrow night because the carpet cleaners are coming Wednesday! Lovely two day warning, huh? But, hey, it’s a freebie due to renewing my lease, so who am I to really argue. I figure I’ll stash the dining room table (thank goodness its lightweight) and chairs on the bed and roll up the rug so they can cover the most area. The Abyss is still off limits and I’ll probably just close both bedroom doors just to avoid the headache. It’s the high-traffic areas that need it anyway.

Ahead!

Filed under: Art, creativity, eHow, webcomic, writing — admin @ 11:27 pm

For a brief fraction of a moment. On the comics at least. Managed to get this week’s strips done tonight and at a reasonable hour, too. It has a lot to do with some streamlined backgrounds this week compared to the host of details involved with the last week’s mini-arc. If I can keep them minimal but complete, I will be happy and done sooner. Buffer is a long way off, though, as I’ve sorta used up my wiggle-room on the RA… print submission. I have til the end of the month before I break my self-stated deadline to the publisher and I don’t intend to break it. Work work work ;-)

But the rest of the week can be split between the print special and my eHow articles, which should get me back on track and in line with all of my deadlines. Maybe I’ll even have a chance to get more script written on Wedding Tarot!

The nap helped…

Filed under: Art, creativity, webcomic — admin @ 11:59 pm

You’d figure it should after 3 hours of snoozin ;-)

The productivity level was pretty low, honestly, but it’s okay since I took care of this week’s comics already I could afford the nap. Instead I got some measuring done for another project that was on the list (it’s half of one to-do) and, well, not much else. Seriously, I needed the downtime.

Tomorrow, though, I’ll draft and article, do the other half of tonight’s project, and maybe have time to compose the flyers for next weekend’s con. I finally have all 4 comic excerpts picked, so now just to lay them out and make a hardcopy. See, no worries :)

Time for the Self-Tanner again…

Filed under: Art, creativity, eHow, travel, webcomic, work — admin @ 11:31 pm

So, Wrath of Con is weekend after next and it’s being held in Panama City. Even though I’m really not much of an ocean person and am in no hurry to don that bathing suit I bought last week (doesn’t hurt to be prepared) still, I like the idea of keeping my options open. And since we’ll be right there on the beach, might as well not glow if I DO wear that suit.

In other news. I wore some fun new earrings today that I made totally out of the blue yesterday. They started as an example for an eHow article and then the wire just started talking to me, urging me to stitch into here and there and suddenly i had a really interesting shape. I’ll be including the pattern as part of the article but they were really fun and quick to make. I plan on experimenting with different wire and bead combos and seeing what else I can do with it, when I get the time.

And speaking of time, mine was spent quite wisely today. Not only did I kick butt at work, just getting stuff done right and left, but I managed to get a ton of work done on the comic tonight so that I should have this week’s comics done by tomorrow night. Which is how it should be. I really didn’t like having to work every night before it was set to upload just to keep up. That’s why I really want that buffer built up! Of course, with the other projects I’ve got, an actual buffer might take a little while, but at least I’m on the right track.

For the Love of Chapter Breaks

Filed under: Art, Rants, reading — admin @ 11:32 pm

So, last night I headed to bed after staring at a computer screen for the majority of the day and chose to read something other than my usual non-fiction before turning off the light. Having just picked up The Plain Janes at the bookstore I cracked the spine and dug right in.

An hour later I’d finished the book. Now, that’s generally not such a bad thing but when you started reading at midnight, that hour is a precious commodity! The reason I read the entire thing in one sitting? Wasn’t because it was a good read (though it was) it was because there were no chapter breaks. There are also no page numbers–it’s like the graphic novel version of Vegas: no windows, no clocks.

This is something I’ve noticed with a few graphic novels or compilations, omnibuses, etc. : it just goes on and on and on.

Now, The Plain Janes–by my count–comes in at 144 pages, and the pages are only half sized so it’s not horribly long, but I would have enjoyed a chance to blink, an opportunity to look over at the clock, realize how late it was, and save the rest for another night. I would have liked the choice.

I tried to figure out why an editor would let a book go out without such things as page numbers or chapter breaks. Obviously it’s a style issue on the page numbers, but what about the chapter breaks? Novels have chapters, sometimes chapters within “books” or acts that further break up the flow. Oh, maybe that’s it? Maybe the editor or artist does not want to break up the flow of his or her mater work. But, see, breaks can be used so incredibly well that a chapter break at the right time can serve as a cliff hanger. They also give the mind a chance to pause and digest what it’s consumed in the previous pages, so breaking the flow should not be a reason.

And not all graphic novels do this. Those that are more trade paperbacks frequently contain their title pages or something like that and it serves a similar purpose. Having also recently started Jane’s World, Collection 1, I was overjoyed to see actual chapters. Watchmen has chapters and even V for Vendetta had a sort of in-line chapter system going on. But Strangers in Paradise? Nope. And that’s almost 350 pages! (Granted, in Book 1, at least, there were gear changes with Katchoo’s poetry, etc. that almost served as chapter breaks, but it’s a tenuous connections at best.)

Then I wondered, maybe graphic novels are trying to be more individual, less like the novels that share part of their name. But, well, I don’t think that’s a good idea, either since–love or hate the name–graphic novels are still struggling for credibility in a lot of genres. If you want to appeal to prose readers who may not think about or think highly of the comic book style, the last thing you want to do is alienate them by ignoring basic stylistic conventions that can build a bridge between the familiar and unfamiliar.

Finally, I wondered if it was a ploy to keep the reader from putting the book down at all. I suppose insecurity could lead an artist to want to force the reader to sit through an entire reading all at once but this insecurity needs to be examined. It’s tough for me to stop reading a good book even with chapter breaks but it is sometimes necessary to pause for one reason or another. If the reader is not compelled to pick up the book again, it’s not the fault of the chapter break.

Basically, after all of this thought, it is my opinion (and I may be in the minority here, but it’s okay) that graphic novels, compilations, etc. should make use of chapter breaks if they are, say, 50 pages or more. Every story has a beginning, a middle and an end, so diving the story at least this simply should not be a difficult thing. Don’t hold your readers hostage, give them a choice and have a little faith in your story.

Forced March

Filed under: Art, eHow, exercise, food, shopping, webcomic, work, writing — admin @ 11:58 pm

Or would that be May? I always get those two confused ;-)

Anyway, I debated with myself for about an hour about whether I was going to go to the grocery store today or tomorrow. I didn’t actually NEED the groceries until tomorrow evening but I knew I wouldn’t want to deal with the store PLUS cooking tomorrow night so I resigned myself the tackling the list today. And as a reward for not killing half the people in that store for being absolute imbeciles, I had dessert before dinner.

But really it’s been a productive evening. I finalized another article, started on the pictures for the third of the month (due Thursday, so I’m actually on track to not panic) and pencilled Wednesday’s comic in full and paneled and lettered Thursday and Friday. I even did penance for that dessert on the stationery bike. Not a bad evening. If I keep it up for the next two nights I’ll be able to start getting ahead by this weekend (wouldn’t that be freaking awesome!).

45 pages

Filed under: Art, SCA, Script Frenzy!, car, clothes, eHow, travel, webcomic, writing — admin @ 11:09 pm

Last night I managed to format all of the pages I had pre-blocked (up to 52 physical pages of the graphic novel) so it’s good that I planned to block in the car while Mom drives us to Orlando.

And, wow, tonight was just a whirl. A very good question was posed over at the A&E forum of eHow and it sparked an instant article. As soon as it gets approved (tomorrow if I’m lucky) I can post it as a reply instead of just a well you could do this, this and this. But it was just something I hadn’t thought to do an article on and there didn’t seem to be one already written on the site, so it was providence, indeed. That’s four of my 7 for the month :)

Also put my new tag on the car, today. Sweet! I wasn’t really “sold” on the State of the Arts plate but it really does look nice when it’s actually on the car, goes well with the blue. Then there was the SCA meeting, amusing as always, come home and pack my overnight bag, start the dishwasher, and worked on next week’s comics. Whew! Busy night!
