Not So Spooky

Filed under: movies, webcomic — admin @ 11:01 pm

For some reason, Spectrum and I decided this weekend would be a good one for scary, spooky, etc. movies. Granted, neither of us are into blood and gore, so we ended up renting Skeleton Key (which Spectrum hadn’t seen, and what started this little odyssey), 1408 (”and the word is… innnnnteresting”), and House on Haunted Hill (the recent remake, which we both remembered liking and being a bit spooked by).

Um, yeah.

I don’t know if I’m just jaded and whatnot or if it was because we didn’t watch them all at night with the lights off or what, but none of them were at all scary and even though Skeleton Key was the most enjoyable one (filed in Drama which was odd but I guess it really is more suspenseful than scary) the other two were incredibly… well, not all that.

But it was a good weekend regardless of the questionable viewing choices and I got a lot done, including all of this week’s comics. Now if I could just get at least 2 articles done and next week’s comics started I won’t have to worry about dropping the ball due to el-surgerio in just a couple days. Pre-Op appointment is tomorrow, more will be revealed, I’m sure.

Slow Progress is Still Progress

Filed under: Art, Relationships, movies, webcomic — admin @ 11:32 pm

And thank heavens for that. It seemed like it took forever to get started drawing tonight. In fact, the first panel of Wednesday’s strip took a full hour. But I’m really proud of some of the poses I managed to draw in the 2nd and 5th panels so it all balances out. Still working on Friday’s pencils but there’s several panels still virtually blank so they may spill over into tomorrow.

Now for something completely different. I’ve been sporadically exposing Spectrum to various movies he’s never watched before. This weekend is was Oscar! with Sylvester Stallone. I’m not really a Sly fan, but this movie makes me giggle whenever i see it. Last weekend it was Lemony Snickett’s a Series of Unfortunate Events, before that Coyote Ugly and before that Sugar and Spice. So far he’s found them all enjoyable and some (SnS, primarily) laugh-out-loud funny :) Granted, there are some movies I’d never ask him to watch (Clueless comes immediately to mind) but there are plenty of others I can mine for entertainment value.

Weekend Update

Wow, so far I’m being very productive. But, then, I’m also going to be turning on the television soon so that could change.

Last night I worked on getting an article drafted after dinner, then Spectrum came over after spending his day unpacking his kitchen and bathroom. What follows is how we got from the cable guy (not the movie) to A Mighty Wind (the movie):

Spectrum tells me about his day which includes the partial installation of his Cable service. Extra cable needed to be run into another room and it was almost done when the crawlspace needed for access was found to be inhabited by a snake which took off farther into the crawl space when Spec tried to snag it (by the tail… he’s lucky he didn’t get bit!). This reminded me of Sneaky Snake, which is a song by Tom T Hall on a record of barnyard songs that I had a child that I’d recently rescued from Mom’s closet. Todd had never heard the song (and, of course, I could only remember two lines of it) and while I was in the ladies room looked it up on You Tube. While we were listening to the various TTH songs on there I grabbed the album cover. Well, there were some songs on there that we’re online so I proceeded to dig out my ancient stereo with the turntable on top and–lo and behold!–actually was able to play the album on it! That led to looking through the rest of the albums on the shelf and I found the one with the Battle of New Orleans on it. Which then put me in the mood to watch A Mighty Wind (which Spec hadn’t seen) so I dashed off to Blockbuster for the DVD. Unfortunately the DVD was very scratched but we were able to watch most of the movie without too much interference. Gotta love the way an evening can develop.

Today I finished up another article for eHow (one left for the month) and wrote about 16 pages on the script. I’m up to 77 pages now, the winner’s bar is totally reachable in the next 4 days. Now, though, I’m going to layout Tuesday’s comic (the last of Year 1!!!) and work on that last article for a bit.

4 down, way more to go

So, after one week of ‘behaving’ myself food-wise and getting a little bit more movement in my day I have managed to knock off 4 pounds. Yay me! Yeah, yeah, I know full well it’s mostly water weight. I’m just happy to see the scale go down.

Saturday was J&S’s wedding and it was very sweet. I have to say it was a bit difficult to tamp down the irreverence with the well-placed thunder during the Eucharist (oh, yes, surprise! it was a full Mass! whee!) but what do you expect from a lapsed everything? Precisely. Then we came home, vegged out in front of the tube while I pecked a few more pages out on the WT script (up to 20 pages now), ordered pizza and enjoyed the evening.

Sunday was spent mostly working on this week’s comics. Not that they were incredibly difficult, it was just me warring with myself. It’s tough to stay on task when I have someone around I would rather be snuggled up with on the couch instead of hunched over a sheet or two of bristol. But they got done. And we made cookies last night!

Tonight I had to introduce him to the hilarity that is Madagascar. (I like to move it, move it!) Figured he could use the laughs after a day of apartment hunting and he was already watching Cars when I got home from the office :) Now that the comic is done, I think the major thing is going to be decided how best to waste the rest of the evening. (move it!)

Only semi-productive

Filed under: apartment, eHow, movies, travel, webcomic, writing — admin @ 11:11 pm

The nap took a 2-hour chunk out of my evening but I think it was worth it since concentration level prior to was next to nil. So only the comic and a smidge of editing got done, but that leaves tomorrow night free to finish up two articles for eHow, pack for the trip, and tidy up the apartment so I’m not coming home to chaos on Sunday night. While I was drawing I watched the first disc of the Disney Rarities set that Amazon delivered last night: oh the joy of Lambert and Ferdinand and the Adventures in Music shorts! Whee!!!

And yes, the leaky ceiling was fixed when I got home.

10/21/2007

Too productive for a Sunday I tell ya!

And a blog post to boot!

Let’s see, I’ve managed to shop (I really need to wrap up these party plans, y’all), pencil a comic and a half, do laundry, start decorating/arranging for the party, draft a NaNo email, create a survey, watch a movie uninterrupted while only knitting, upload two articles, and I’m not done yet! But I will be soon. Gotta get better at this whole bedtime thing before NaNo really rolls around so I can write in the mornings again.I think that really made the difference last year to getting me to 50K in fine form.

And the Abyss is still clean and totally blowing my mind.

Oops… I did it again…

Filed under: NaNoWriMo, Relationships, creativity, eHow, movies, social life, webcomic, work, writing — admin @ 10:02 pm

Overslept. Only this time, I actually woke up on time, but didn’t /get/ up (very important distinction) and told myself that ‘5 more minutes’ lie which then took two hours. Whoops! So at 5 minutes to eight I was just getting up and calling the office to say I’d be late. Sigh… In truth I haven’t done that in quite a while and it’s not like I got in trouble or anything, but still. Hour late for work, what a way to start the day, huh?

And it was really one of those days for the first 3/4. I got a lot done, honestly, but I felt horrible, was cranky, and was super stressed. I think it might have been fall-out from last night. See, as I was writing last night’s entry who called me but RockStar, back from the dead (or nearly so, he really had gone through some serious medical stuff and work stuff and stuff stuff according his myspace and, really, it’s not like I was waiting around to hear from him). He wanted to chat… about himself… but things really seem to be solidifying for him so I’m happy. I don’t know if I mentioned it before but he tends to be surrounded by chaos and I have a suspicion that he’s more interested in me because I am way more stable than he will ever be.

And I told him as much. And that I would be happy to talk to him about things but, honestly, I couldn’t do the whole emotional scaffolding job that I usually do for people. Not this time. And he’s cool with it. Still says at some point he’s going to take me to dinner. We shall see.

But after this impromptu life-coaching session I decided to try and destress (even though it was already 11) by hitting the SG chatroom but that didn’t exactly work because there was a smidge of drama waiting inside. It’s okay, this has been going on a while and has nothing to do with SG but it didn’t quite hit the note of levity I was looking for. So at midnight I finally went to bed after reading for a bit. So it’s no wonder the whole getting up on time thing didn’t happen.

But today I managed to get several things off the work to-do list as well as (finally!) confirm a good place for the NaNo Kick-Off but getting there took the form of a mini internal tantrum (well, palmetto got a summary so it wasn’t completely internal but she also gave me the awesome idea that solved the Kick-Off riddle, so it’s okay) and then I was more tired than tantrumy but still, it was an improvement. Knowing how much I need to get ahead of the artcile count before the end of the month I went and checked out a new coffee shop after work and drafted my next article. Tomorrow I’ll go to All Saints and write another.

Also, once home, I finished watching “Knocked Up” (Oh em gee that’s some funny shit and I need to own that movie) and sketched out Thursdays RA… strip and I’ll start inking it when I finish this entry. I also got an email from a friend that put the dorkiest, stupidest, happiest grin on my face after returning “Knocked Up” to Blockbuster. I’m a dork, but I’m a happy dork. Off to ink!

Not Playing with a Full Deck

Filed under: NaNoWriMo, creativity, friends, movies, social life, wtf? — admin @ 11:31 pm

So last night, after I totally had nothing to say, I decided I needed a little down-time for the brain so at 9pm I put on CSI (the first time I’ve turned the tv on in several days) and decided to play a little solitaire.

Now, I really like the tactile quality of actual playing cards as opposed to play on the computer so I regularly play a few hands, and I regularly win. In fact, its sort of a thing, now: I play til I’ve won at least once. Not last night. After half an hour I still had yet to even come close to winning. I wasn’t even getting all of the aces on a regular basis. And one time I could have sworn I was on the first go-through with the spare cards but the final set was only one, not three. I convinced myself I’d not payed attention, though, and that it must have been a second go-through after all.

I finally gave up and went about tidying the front of the apartment and then decided to work on some productive bits; including the paintings for the bedroom. I set out the four canvases on the table and grab the main reference book only to see exactlly why I wasn’t winning at solitaire: I had used playing cards as bookmarks. 5 cards were still holding places in the book. Yup, I was literally ‘not playing with a full deck.’

* * *

Now, some people may wonder–indeed I’ve questioned myself about this very thing once or twice–why I put such silly, somewhat embarassing things about myself on this blog. The way I see it, it’s only fair. I mean, I use this space to rant and whine on a semi-regular basis so it’s only right that those of you who read through all those bog-downed-blogs get to laugh with me when I do something completely bone-headed like the above. Trust me, I laughed at myself last night when I realized the error.

* * *

After work (one of the slowest days in the history of work-kind) I met the Bard for supper and we strategized on the upcoming NaNoWriMo. Under two months to go!!! Once home I picked up the brushes once again and did a bit more work on the canvases before palmie called. The conversation was just getting sillier and sillier, and the social issue she called to discuss became a running joke of “I just don’t get it” that became even more appropriate when I told her to get her ass over here and we ended up watching Clueless. It was exactly what was needed to dispell some of the confusion from earlier in the day. Thank heavens for good friends!!!

* * *

And, finally, the song that’s been running through my head this evening. I adore Deirdre Flint’s quirky lyrics and Past Life Regressed has one of the most infectious melodies out there, kind of a big band swing of sorts meets electric guitar. I don’t know. It just works. And it’s funny, even when its more comiseratory.

Sanity took over

Filed under: creativity, eHow, food, friends, knitting, mixology, money, movies, social life, tv, webcomic, writing — admin @ 2:24 am

And I slept in. It felt like a Saturday, really, since I didn’t get up until eleven.

But it was actually a Friday, so I took care of a few business-type things. One being my upgrade from analog to digital cable. It’ll be two weeks before a tech can come out on a non-work day, but it’s no rush. I would like it to be set up by the time the new Fall shows start, and the 15th should do just fine. I think I’ll probably be cancelling the Blockbuster Online now that I’ll have more channels plus On Demand to use.

Then I tried to go have some bloodwork done. Now, at my annual appt I specifically asked: do I need to be fasting for this bloodwork and the nurse said no. In fact, she went as far as to suggest that even if they asked I should just say I hadn’t had anything to eat regardless of the truth. Not exactly comforting. But anyway, since I had today off and the lab was open I figured I’d go and take care of it but first, since I didn’t want to go all faint or have a low-blood-sugar moment, I had a sandwich. Wrong. I get there and insist the nurse told me it wasn’t fasting and they call the doctors office and tell me the nurse was wrong. I get pissed off and say, ‘well, I would have appreciated knowing this and you might want to inform K’s nurse that she doesn’t know what she’s doing.’ I’m thinking about sending a letter… its just not right that a nurse would suggest fibbing such information that could skew lab-work: it’s a waste of time and money if I’d done so.

So I was a bit pissed, still, when I returned palmie’s call. After a bit of a rant we decided to meet up for dinner and then ended up getting the first season of Coupling and Blood & Chocolate from Blockbuster. I didn’t expect to like the latter, honestly, but it was surprisingly well done and absolutely gorgeous as far as the cinematography goes. Coupling was just absolutely adorable in a very off-kilter brit-humor way. I need to own this show, that’s all there is to it.

But as far as productivity is concerned… well, not so much that can be claimed as completed. But I did map out the next three weeks of Random Acts…, complete both next weeks strips, and I got several inches knitted on Grecian Plait’s front panel. Not a bad day, really, and I think I might watch an episode or two of Charmed before going to bed while I do the visual aids for the next calligraphy article (and/or some research thereof).

And speaking of articles: Dun da da dun!!! I received the check today for that article I wrote in July. I am officially a paid writer. Isn’t that cool?!?!?!? It wasn’t quite the rush that having that article ‘go live’ was, and I still hope to get something in an actual print publication at some point. But as palmie said, you gotta start somewhere!

Other unexpected item of note: Gin & Cranberry goes really well with Faux-reo’s (Publix brand Oreo’s :)

S.O.S.

The call came just after I sprayed the second coat of white. Palmie’s car had stalled and she was stranded in the Prince ‘Rat parking lot. Off I go to the rescue, while it’s totally pugs and pomeranians outside, and consequently do not hear the three attempts Palmie made to tell me it started again. So we ended up hitting Moe’s for an early supper and gossip-fest since we hadn’t talked in, oh, a day.

Since she had no other plans and I felt like having company, we made an impromptu movie night of it. First watching Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, followed by several episodes of Firefly, and ending with the last few epis of the Girls Next Door, Season 1. Meanwhile I kept spraying and taping and such and by the time she left I had both the red and the white jobs done, saving the black for today. I also started the Grecian Plait sweater between the coats.

Now the black is down, the letters, numbers and symbols have all been done for the keys, the ‘ears’ are painted and the red linen has been dotted and is drying so I can ‘Stiffy’ and sculpt it into the monitor’s bow. Not a bad job for a weekend. I have some touch-ups to do with a brush on some edges, then I’ll let the paint cure for 48 before hitting it with a couple coats of sealer. And my first mod will be done.

Now I really need to get on the ball and draw next week’s RA strips. What? me? easily distracted? The hell you say…

Monday Miscellany

Filed under: movies, webcomic — admin @ 11:24 pm

Oh crap! I almost forgot to upload the next Random Acts… Be right back!

That would definitely have sucked… I thought I was forgetting something earlier but I just figured it was guilt over not working out. Which it is, but this is slightly more important.

So, this weekend Mom and I were watching Crack-squared (Nora Roberts on Lifetime) and there were all these gawd-awful Stardust promos. Now, don’t get me wrong, Claire Danes is a perfectly good actress but since growing up she totally looks like a drag queen. A good drag queen, but a drag queen nonetheless. I think it’s the jaw mostly that does it. Mom disagreed and countered with the fact that Sandra Bullock has an Adam’s apple. I told her that was, like, impossible, and she agreed but swore up and down that not only was it there but that it trumped Claire Danes drag-queen-jaw.

Damn if she’s not right…

Having several Sandra Bullock movies in my DVD collection I popped in Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood tonight after dealing with grocery shopping and dinner (which was late thanks to the necessity of said shopping and the inherent schlepping and sorting and so on and so forth). At first I was prepared to argue with Mom as in most scenes her neck appears just as normal as the majority of her costars (the female ones, I mean) but there, in the scene on the bridge where she rambles on about hitting snooze on her biological clock, there it is: it really does look like she has an Adam’s apple. Now, I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt as far as lighting is concerned and state that it’s not that she really has an Adam’s apple, it just looks like it in certain light. But still, I don’t think it’s nearly as prominent as Claire Danes jaw.

What does all this have to do with anything? Nothing. It just is.

7/30/2007

Whoopsie! Another little hiatus.

I suppose I could warn you when I’m going to do that. If only I knew in advance myself!

So, let’s see, where did we leave off? Cousin M was in town and I played hookie (with permission) half a day to take her to lunch and show her around T-town on Wednesday. It was the Loop for lunch, five hours of driving around Tallahassee (I’m still a little uneasy about looking at a map and trying to see what sort of screwed-up loops I made), then dinner with Mom, J & K at Marie Livingston’s. Yum! Since Cousin M’s hosts were the early-to-bed type we got her home just after seven and I ran a couple of party-related errands before going home, myself.

Since it was only just eight o’clock I figured there was no sense in wasting time so I started draping the walls. Wow. Somehow I did not expect to have to move one wall of furniture and–should I ever be crazy enough to try this again–that so many trips up and down the step-ladder would be needed. My thighs are still protesting all of the steps but hey, it’s a great glut workout! Three hours and a quart of sweat later I had drapedthe four walls I was going to (because I ran out of sheeting), hung up the silver stars with their kick-ass mini lights, and draped caution tape over the bookcases and vertical-blind valance.

And wouldn’t you know I came home Thursday to a note on the door saying Pest Control was coming by on Friday.

Thankfully I did not get a call from the office on Friday, so I can only presume that the decorated table and prominent bar-cart convinced whomever not to report strange activity.

Would you believe that on Saturday I was actually 2 hours ahead of schedule??? I know, totally unheard of for one of my parties. Usually I’m waiting on at least one appetizer to finish when the first guest arrives right on time. Instead, I was cooling my jets at two o’clock (having already showered and primped and changed my shirt four different times) just waiting out the clock until I could reheat the final appetizer and start the popcorn popper.

This turned out to be a good thing, though, as just as I was getting ready to start the popcorn there was a knock on the door: the Bard was 45 minutes early! See, I must have known something like that was going to happen, but it was actually fine (though I did tease him about it for a little while), but it gave me a chance to give him his birthday present before the party started and he kept me company while I finished up the last-minute preparations.

‘It’s a Disaster!’ Movie Night was a rousing success. All of the food went over wonderfully, there was plenty of it (which means I don’t have to cook for a few more days! yay, leftovers!), the guests mixed as wonderfully as I thought they would, and the movies provided ample mocking factor. Here was the rundown for those that might be interested:

4pm: Dante’s Peak and Spicy Appetizers (cheeses with pepper jellies, jalapeno and ham corn muffins, black bean dip, salsa, guacamole and chips, and–even though it’s not spicy–bacon wrapped artichoke hearts or, as Palmie refers to them, Crack)
6pm: Twister and Tasty Cow (’nother cow/same cow) Roulade (with garlicky green beans and red potatoes)
8pm: Posiedon (2007) and Pineapple Upside Down Boat Cake (with blue jell-o sea!)
9:45pm: Armageddon with S’mores and Rumballs

And the house drink was a Mudslide, though I do try to keep my bar fairly well stocked in case someone wanted something different. I also provided a pleathora of popcorn toppings, both sweet and spicy, though I think most people preferred it merely salted.

We finished up the movies just after midnight with a mass exodus for the door. We were all exhausted, but that’s a great way to end a party. I made sure everyone had their favors (small boxed sets of Worst Case Scenario cards, compass/carabiner clip and emergency whistle) and was safe to drive home before starting the clean-up. It actually only took about an hour to put away all of the food, load the dishwasher and clear the table of it’s debris. In fact, the only thing waiting for me Sunday morning was to take down the draping, rehang the pictures on two walls and clean out the rented popcorn machine for it’s return today. Otherwise I vegged out and did some reasearch for Wedding Tarot.

Thankfully I had this week’s Random Acts… in the can already so I didn’t have to worry about that tonight. Instead I wandered through StumbleUpon for a while, flipped through some old music books, and fiddled with a story that might end up on New Bard’s Press. Tomorrow I forsee spending a lot of time clearing out the Oldenfeld.net forums of the rest of their flotsam and making some content changes. One of these days (someday soon, hopefully) I’m going to overhaul this site, add some pages for the different long-term projects (like Random Acts… and Wedding Tarot) and make a space for I-Friday submissions, too. It’s still on my to-do list to get back into that habit.

I feel like, right now, I’m in a planning stage. I have a lot of big ideas that I want to see through, if I can, but I need to figure out how to balance them with the things already on my plate. Do I need to let go of some projects, again, decide which are more feasible first, or do I just need to find some stronger internal motivation? It’s probably a strong case for of the latter, so if I can keep the ball rolling I might just pull it off!

Whoops!

Filed under: knitting, movies — admin @ 11:00 pm

Almost forgot to post! The horror!

And speaking of horror: I watched Skeleton Key tonight. First off, it’s not so much horror as suspense and second off, it was more interesting than suspenseful. It was a smidge predictable but since I love just about anything having to do with Louisianna and its culture, even the dark bits, I was totally enthralled. Makes me want to research stuff. Also makes me want to visit NOLA again. Still, I’m glad I watched it while it was still daylight out… we don’t want to tempt my imagination any more than it already is now do we?

Anyway, while watching that and the finally-not-rerun Gilmore Girls and House I worked on a bit of knitting (because if it’s Tuesday I must be knitting). I actually got one little footie done! While the bind off could have been a smidge looser, I actually don’t think it will be a problem since I needed the edge to be snug anyway. I will loosen it up on the mate, though. Yay for progress. Especially since my bead knitting was being problematic on Sunday: I must have knit that idea 5 different ways before I tried crochet instead and while each method had it’s merits, they also had their flaws. Still, I now know what I’m up against and I think I may go back to the original idea and just finagle some way to make the binding off work.

Well, I took some heavy-duty cough syrup a little bit ago (before practicing the harp again… I almost have ‘When Irish Eyes are Smiling’ error free on the lead hand, woot!) and the codiene is starting to kick in. Nitey-night friends!

Weekend Warp-Up

Filed under: General, apartment, movies — admin @ 7:13 am

(you know, that was a typo, but I think I’ll leave it just the same ;-) )

So! This weekend? I really didn’t do all that much and I loved every minute of it! Saturday I did get some exercise in: moving furniture for delivery of the new (to me) couch and the liberation of the old loveseat. This full-size sofa also features recliners at both ends and is cushy but not overly worn like the other one. Since it is very green (hunter with navy flecks or some such) and was delivered on St Pat’s, it’s name is Patrick. Simple enough.

Palmie came over that afternoon for the Firthiness. That is basically a pleathora of Colin Firth movies, including both Bridget Jones’ movies. Those movies were the meal inspiration of the day from the infamous Turkey Curry Buffet scenes. Now, granted, I was in not rush to actually prepare and turkey curry, nor was palmie in the mood to eat one. Instead I created a mix-and-match curry buffet with three curry sauces, three starches, and three meats. It was entirely too yummy. Bowing to the ‘pressure’ (not) of the holiday, we felt obliged (more like used it as an excuse) to drink Chocolate Leprechauns (chocolate milk and Bailey’s) towards the end of the evening. We actually made Fuzzy Chocolate Leprechauns because we added Godiva as well :)

Alcohol = palmie stayed the night (slept on the new sofa which is long enough for normal mortals to stretch out on–once you arrange yourself correctly over the support bars for the recliner bits) so I made pancakes for brekkie accompanied by Turkey bacon. Due to the texture of microwaved turkey bacon, palmie called it Turkey Pringles and, well, yeah: they are! Texture notwithstanding, the addiction factor is high. Mmmmmm

Eventually she left to go home and veg while I did the same on my new (to me) sofa. I lounged while reading a cheesy chick-lit-mystery and then worked on some sketching when done with that. Vegging was highly important as I’ve discovered that the only way I make it through a full work-week is to spend at least 24 of the weekend 48 doing abso-freaking-lutely nothing. How I’m going to manage things like Dragon*Con in September or Mom’s Birthday cruise in June are up in the air. I’m thinking naps may be required, regardless of how much fun I’m having.

Movie Musings

Filed under: movies — admin @ 7:06 am

Those who know me, know I love movies. Growing up, broke as we were, a Summer Sunday afternoon would find us at the dollar show for the complimentary AC. Much later I would date a self-proclaimed movie buff and my horizons broadened. Now I happen to be a part of a group of friends who enjoy getting together from time to time to watch (and mock) movies we love and those we love to hate.

Palmie and I have had several 8-hour movie marathons, always on some sort of theme, in the recent past. Such evenings are rife with mockery and semi-related chit-chat. But when alone I still like to watch movies for the pure enjoyment of them, suspend disbelief for a while, and bliss out with ‘old friends.’

This past weekend was one of those times. When I’d had enough of staring at the computer screen (I still <3 my mac very much) or need to work on knitting or just veg, I popped in a video. For some reason I felt like watching one of the few (perhaps the only) Nicolas Cage movies that doesn’t make me scream in frustration: National Treasure.

Now, the thing is, it’s appeal lies not with its talent, I care little for any of the actors/actresses, but in the ‘treasure hunt’ storyline. I love things like this. Which, it occurred to me, is why I enjoyed the Davinci Code movie–I really didn’t care for Tom Hanks’ performance by and large, but I loved the scavenger-hunt mentality of the movie. Same with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Granted, IJatToD has a lot more going for it, but its the same sort of thing, same general premise. Apparently, this appeals to me greatly, as it also describes the type of games I like (yes, I really liked playing Myst, sue me). Had I had another 4 hours to kill in front of the tv I might have been tempted to dash to Blockbuster for those two films.

Another movie watched (different day) was Bring It On III: All or Nothing. Okay, yes, teeny bopper feel good flicks are another of my guilty pleasures. I mean, really, how can you not just love the simplicity of glossy teen problems when the world exists only for their enjoyment and torture? But I hate sequels. With a passion. Most sequels are just drivel and even worse when they swap talent within the same character, etc. (Note: this does not include trilogies and series and so forth, no, what I’m talking about are movies that did awesome so the studio decides to find someone to write another movie with a smiliar storyline or a continuation of the characters.)

The goodness of Bring It On was just such that I was willing to take the chance and buy the sequel when it came out. Eh. Bring It On II was not overly special. It had some things going for it, but not enough. BiOIII, on the other hand, is the epitome of adorableness with Hayden Paniterre and crew. III gets a lot closer to the original premise of the first BiO and I think the setting plays the biggest part. II takes place in college. College is still very insular for many people, but it’s a little harder to feign ignorance of the world outside (and the relative triviality of cheerleading–oh, come on, at least in high school cheerleading can get you a scholarship TO college, pro cheerleading squads are so few and hard to get onto…; plus, I and III showed actual classroom involvement, even on a low level, II was cheerleading and outdoor socializing, I don’t recall any classes ever or homework crisis or exams, etc.) on any college campus compared to the possibilities of high-school comedic drama.

What does all this have to do with the price of tea in China? Absolutely nothing, I just thought I’d share!

Flying to California WAY too freaking early tomorrow morning (6am flight… I am insane), so don’t expect an update til at least Thursday, and even then, well, who knows.
