Well, V left for Alabama today around 4ish so that gave me the evening free of wifely duties (like providing dinner or ever pleasant conversation) and I got a slightly earlier start on the second round of cake baking. (Of course, I did have to go by Michael's and WallyWorld on the way home so I didn't get THAT early of a start.)
The first batch of cakes is in the oven and I realize that I will have a bit more downtime tonight that last night. I don't know whether that is good or not, we shall see. Last night I was still setting up my production line and cutting cake boards, as well as chatting with V and so forth. Tonight all of that is done already!
In non-cake news I had to go back to the doctor today about my back. The good news is that the pinching of the sciatic nerve seems to have stopped, so the Toradol worked that much. Unfortunately I'm still in considerable pain from the still-aggravated sacroiliac joint, so I'm on a different "cocktail" of Feldene for inflamation, Flexeril for muscle relaxer both for my hip and the muscles that get out of whack compensating for the pain in the butt, and Tylenol-3 for daily pain. I went for x-rays after the appointment and its pretty much a no news is good news situation on both fronts. If I feel better in 10 days I don't have to go back, if there's nothing of concern on the x-rays they won't call me.
Okay, I think it's just about time to go mix the next batch of batter. Be back later.
Okay, night of the cakes 1 is over and I am right where I should be: surprisingly! The bottom layyer of all tiers (and the half-sheet side cake) are baked, trimmed where necessary, and crumb coated. Of course, due to the creative pan options I had to exercise I need 4 more cake mixes than originally planned, and another dozen eggs. but that's no big deal.
Observations from the evening:
* No matter what the charts say, a 6" pan does NOT require 2 cups of batter. 1 1/2 will be quite sufficient.
*Don't try and bake said 6" cake at the same time as the 16" layer. Yes, the batter quantity is most sufficient this way, but there really isn't enough space...let it sit for the 8" and 11" round.
*Making icing is a very messy task...especially when you are out of practice.
*It's not the best idea to leave the dog's water dish under the counter with the mixer.
*The cake-icer tip is the best. invention. ever. 5 cakes of various sizes crumb-coated and "filled" in under an hour. Wo-Hoo!
Off to deglaze...
Okay, so it's one night prior to the begininng of wedding cake madness. I'm caught up on my swaps, straightened up my computer desk, nearly cleared off the kitchen table and all kitcheny flat surfaces in preparation for the many pans of cake, and had this evening basically free to do as I wanted.
So why was I sacked out on the couch watching Sabrina and snoozing before 10pm? Because I'm horrible with down time, that's why! I need deadlines, I need a small amount of stress to keep me going! That and, if I play computer-chair therapist, the idea of not being able to continue anything begun tonight placed a creative block in my path.
But tomorrow I will be busy as soon as I get home: cutting out cake boards, making the bottom layers of each of 4 tiers and a side cake, and making copious amounts of buttercream icing. Friday will be more of the same, and Saturday will be filled with the fondant work. Or at least that's my plan!
Even though it seemed like this month would be a calm one (compared to the frenetic pace of April) it was not to be. In fact, I think more of it had to do with catching up from April and then running into the tasks for May. Maybe June will be better.
But because I haven't written in a while, here's a few things I have completed:
*Lots of jewelry for my site (still waiting to be updated) and this site.
*2 designed knitted pieces and working on a third.
*Turned 28.
*Finished two more classes at Community College.
*Made my first tiara :)
*Booked the resort for the mini Disney vacay.
Next on the agenda
*Wedding cake for Sam and Aimee.
*Create layouts for contest submissions.
*Have fun at this site
*Update the RPS store site
*Update the rest of this website
Stay tuned...
