Imagine That: Snowflake Spinner Card

In The Studio

I love things that move or are otherwise interactive. My latest card over on the Imagine blog features a spinner element and a gorgeous (yet simple!) peek-a-boo background.

Our color of December is Frosted Blue, so I used a muted blue to “frost” the inside scene of the card with tinted Creative Medium and stencils.

Then I paired it with some die cut snowflakes from Rinea Foil suspended within the frame on the front of the card.

The Rinea foil held up very well as I cut it on my Cricut. After a couple of false starts, I discovered the aluminum foil setting did the best, allowing me to carefully pop out the snowflakes after the cutting was finished. I might try it again and bump the pressure up a notch to see if it made separating the shapes from the rest of the foil sheet a little easier, but I didn’t want to chance it on these delicate shapes (and under deadline!).

Make sure to head over to the Imagine blog to see the video of how this card comes together!

Imagine That: Faux Metal Stamping

In The Studio

Lately I’ve had puzzle pieces on my mind. Not so much the desire to put together an actual puzzle, but more their use as a metaphor for life.

  • Picking up the pieces
  • Missing piece
  • Piece of my heart

And so on…

Puzzles make fairly inexpensive crafting materials, since you can usually find some at the thrift or dollar stores. It doesn’t matter what’s on them, because you’re going to transform them into something else.

I have a whole list of projects planned for puzzle pieces (watch the blog and, more often, my Instagram feed for works in progress), but today I’m sharing a fun faux finish project over on the Imagine Blog–faux metal stamping. The metallic silver Creative Medium is pretty much perfect for this technique, and I hope you’ll give it a try!

Strut Your Stuff with Stencil Girl and Imagine

In The Studio

It’s Blog-Hop time! This month Imagine teamed up with Stencil Girl for a product/design team collab as well as a giveaway (more details below–make sure you scroll all the way to the bottom!).

I had a lot of fun working with my new tools from Stencil Girl and used them to put together a mixed-media canvas. It started with an acrylic paint base and then–why I don’t I show you, instead.

As you can probably guess, I took my biggest inspiration from the peacock feather stencil and chose colors that worked with that idea. I was more amused than I necessarily should be that I turned the dancing figure into a fan dancer, but it worked (I think?).

Once I had all the basic layers in place, I ended up leaving it on my work table for almost a week, trying to decide how to finish it. The overall look was really bright, which is not my usual goal, and I wanted to add a stamped phrase but I wasn’t sure of the best way to do that at first.

I ended up adding a couple layers of ink buffed over the creative medium bits to highlight the textures and then stamped the message onto vellum, applied it with the Shimmer Artist’s Medium, and called it done!
