Imagine That: The Most Hospitable Fruit

In The Studio

Pineapple, that is!

So the story goes, back in the European voyaging days pineapples were very popular with the men and women at court, as were most things deemed exotic from faraway lands. It filtered down to the colonies, but with no refrigeration and the long shipping time between picking and destination, access to a whole, fresh pineapple was a rare and expensive treat. First a symbol of privilege, the pineapple ultimately become a symbol of hospitality as, if you served a whole pineapple to your guests, they knew they were highly favored and being treated like royalty.

Even though pineapples are far easier to come by in any form these days, they’re still a popular choice for guest room decor, newel posts, door knockers, and other home items.

Today’s projects are far less high brow, but very fun!

First, over on the Imagine blog, I’ve come up with a pineapple-inspired wine bottle wrap that would work equally well for a hostess gift or table decor. In fact, I’m sad I didn’t come up with this last year for Todd’s luau party.

Then, using the same ink-shading technique and the cast-off edge from the first project, I make a pineapple-adorned card that would be perfect for welcoming a new neighbor or summer baby.

Imagine That: Coffee or Cocktails

In The Studio

Today I have a two-fer to share with you–one project here and another, using the same stamp set and theme, over on the Image blog.

Waffle Flower was kind enough to share some products with the Imagine Artists in Residence this month and you know how much I love Waffle Flower for their cute monkey stamps, right? For these projects, though, I used the Currently Drinking mini stamps that are part of their planner series.

For Imagine I used the wine and cocktail-themed stamps in the set to create a scattered, embossed background for a fun card perfect for a bachelorette bar crawl or a girl’s night out.

Not to be left out, the coffee and tea images also in the set were perfect for a bracelet when used with shrink plastic and a few jewelry tools. Check out the video, below, of just how easy this bracelet came together.

Here’s what I used to create this bracelet (amazon links, below, are affiliate links–thank you for supporting this blog!)

M is for Monogram

In The Studio

Our first May challenge was the letter M, and I picked monogram. Monograms are big business here in the south–they’re on everything, it seems–and I though it would be fun to create something with my monogram that was both functional and decorative.

Make sure to check out the post (and video!) over on the Imagine blog.

The Vertigo pretty much makes this project–it adds such a cool effect to the background. I will say, though, that cutting the Vertigo, staying on the line I’d drawn, that did make a little dizzy in the moment. But, hey, it’s a small price to pay for a fun little keychain.

That said, if you’re not sure this would hold up to regular use, I think the project could be made with fabric in place of the cardstock and felt in place of the foam. Then pierce and blanket-stitch around the edges to keep everything together? That could totally work. Or even some thin (glove-weight) leather or pleather.

And because I was incredibly neglectful in sharing my projects over the last few months, here’s a handy recap of the March and April goodies from Imagine.

In the earlier days of scrapbooking, paper piecing (handcut or with the aid of punches) was a common decorative element. I have a hunch that it found it’s way to paper crafting from quilting–paper piecing is a technique for more intricate quilt designs–so I reversed it with this llama paper piecing based on a quilting pattern. I still have no idea what all I’m going to do with it, but it was loads of fun to make!

Our color challenge for April was Lapis and you know that made me happy. I adore my small collection of lapis jewelry and decided to use one of the pieces–a bracelet I purchased in Mexico–as the inspiration for this card anytime card.

I finally got another art journal page put together, this one for the theme of “the bigger the better.” There’s a video of the process over on the Imagine blog.

From big to small, the next project stands about 5″ tall and it my most ambitious quilling project to date. The patterned paper gave the coils and interesting look and it was a lot of fun figuring out how I wanted to pair the different pieces together to make the flowers.

What does this embroidery project have to do with Imagine products? First I stamped the rose image onto the linen with VersaFine ink, then I dyed my own embroidery floss using Fireworks! Spray to create variegated green and pink thread that I used to embroider the stamped image. Just another way to use the supplies we already own but in a different context!

My last project to share has something in common with the first: Vertigo. I hadn’t used this material before this year and now I get to play with ways to incorporate it into different uses. For this one, the swirly nature of the Vertigo plus the leaves stamped on top kind of give it a “floating on water” look that I didn’t want to cover up. So all I added was a bit of patterned paper and a hand-written greeting to finish it out. Sometimes simple is best, you know?

Holiday 3-In-1

In The Studio

Today over on the Imagine blog, my latest project is up: Go check it out!

jvanderbeek_imaginecrafts_snowflake_card_tag_ornament_main

It includes instructions on making a shaker card, ornament, and gift tag all from a single set-up with the die cutting machine and a single pass with the embossing paste.

Earlier this month I continued my love affair with faux finishes and created my take on mercury glass and made them into a quartet of napkin rings fit for the holiday table.

I believe it’s been a little while since I shared my Imagine projects (shame on me, I know!), so let’s keep rewinding with some October projects:

jvanderbeek_imaginecrafts_masks_main

I may not be on the Helmar team anymore, but I do still love their products and have a bit of a stash left. This mask charm project put Imagine’s sprays and embellishers to work with linen and Helmar’s stiffening and draping liquid.

jvanderbeek_imaginecrafts_halloween_garland_main

And does this Halloween garland really need explaining? Really?

jvanderbeek_imaginecrafts_book_main

Is it bad form to have favorite projects? I don’t care if it is, because this book I made for a September project just makes me squee with delight. The book itself is cool enough, but the cover just makes me swoon–instant age courtesy of some careful application of Creative Medium and metallic inks.

jvanderbeek_imaginecrafts_main

I haven’t forgotten my mixed media friends, either. My other September project was art journal meets wall art and was a rather satisfying monochromatic project.

2016_august_jv_puppycard_main

Going back a little farther, in August we went to the dogs and I make this puppy love card that I still hanging around my work table because I find myself terribly clever some days.

2016_august_jv_bulletjournal_main

And to complete this project rewind, we have something rather topical (I think). I still want to go into the planner journey I went on this year in greater detail, but for now it’s important to know that I spent my summer in a bullet journal and had a merry time exploring different ways to customize my weekly spreads. For the back-to-school time frame I played around with this particular layout in my journal with stamps and inks and some choice embellishments.

Creative Team Project Round-Up

In The Studio

How was your weekend?

It was supposed to be absolutely miserable down here but the weather was gorgeous after Friday night’s showers. As a friend called it on Facebook: there’s nothing so blue as a rain-scrubbed sky. Really, it was amazing.

Of course, I spent the vast majority of it at my computer, staring at InDesign. Why? Because I’ve signed on as the Art Director for Millin’Air Magazine as of the spring issue (which will be released later this week). And while I can’t show you the full magazine (yet!) I can at least let you see the cover!

The cover was finished a couple weeks back, it was the other 53 pages I was finishing up this weekend!

And that reminds me… I’ve been remiss in sharing some of the projects I’ve been doing for the teams I’m on. Let’s do a full quarter-1 recap, shall we? (Links are under each project if you want to see the play-by-play.)

Helmar Creative Team

March wrapped up my 3rd (6-month) term with Helmar and I’m happy to be staying on for the next 6 months, as well.

Backing up to the beginning of the year, though, I started with a mixed media tag:

Reading Road Map Bookmark

Something about book pages at the beginning of the year.

And followed that up with some decoupaged tile coasters.

And maps. No clue why I was hung up on maps.

Where You Are, Where You’ve Been

In February I pulled out one my adorable (if I do say so myself) digital stamps for a Valentine’s card. Valentine’s was the earliest we said we might get a dog, and I was hoping real hard!

Not that stuffed pup, but another one I gave Todd on our first Valentine's together says "I wuf you" and blushes when you squeeze it.

Puppy Love Valentine’s Card

Of course, with the bathroom renovations still in full swing, I think we’d have been the ones in the doghouse had we gotten a pup in the middle of all that!

It’d been so long since I’d had time for any doll-related projects, I was afraid they were going to stage a tiny, plastic mutiny. That, and the slow pace of the real-life renovation, had me jonesing for some instant gratification, miniature-style.

My Cricut made this miniature project even easier!

In March I returned to a favorite theme of mine: the phases of the moon. Now, you might recognize the images from an old Gauche Alchemy project. I photographed them and printed out the sizes I needed for my cross between a sun-catcher and a dream-catcher.

I still love these moon phase paintings.

And just before Easter I tried my hand at the classic “Exploding Box” card.

I've been holding onto those carrot-colored Easter eggs for *years* wondering what I was going to make with them!

Exploding with Easter Fun!

Now, that technically wraps up the first three months, but I have one more Helmar project to show you.

I mentioned on Friday that I’d participated in an April Fool’s post over there, despite my dislike of the “holiday” and, well, I don’t think I’ll be doing that again. Not only did it backfire, but it did so in an entirely unpredicted way.

I mean, not in the way that Cake Wrecks did (where they apparently lost readers over the faux-sponsored post), but still. It did not go over well.

Here’s the project:

It's tougher than you'd think coming up with adhesive alternatives...

It’s tougher than you’d think coming up with adhesive alternatives…

A New Direction

If you read that post and project, you might pick up on the fact that there’s something missing from the project. Namely any Helmar adhesives. See, I thought that a project for a glue company that used absolutely no glue was appropriately inappropriate. Drop a few broad hints about a change in direction and, well, it sounded good in theory. There were some crossed wires between Georgia and Australia, however, and a lot of conversation at 6am (my time) on the 1st, before we got them untangled.

All’s well that ends well, and all that, but I think it’s safe to say I won’t be doing another prank post in the future.

Imagine Crafts

So far I’ve really been enjoying my time with the Imagine Crafts Artist In Residence team. There are just so many fabulous products to work with (and more coming, from what I hear) as well as some neat collaborations/team swaps coming up that I’m really looking forward to!

I started the year with a planner dashboard project that I’m pretty sure I’ve already shared on the blog, but let’s post it again just for completion’s sake.

Still loving my word for the year!

One Word Planner Dashboard

The interesting thing about the AIRs team (at least in the beginning) is that we submit multiple projects but not all of them go up on the blog, as was the case with the other two projects that I submitted for January.

February fared much better and all three of my projects made it onto the blog. There were some technical issues, though, so these links go to pdf files instead of web pages.

My first project incorporated one of my new favorite tools, the gelli plate. I’d ordered them for The Crafty Branch and they are just so fun to play with. Usually you use paint, but I wanted to try them out with inks and I think I like that even better! This print was for the Anything But Red Valentine’s theme.

The versatility of the gelli plate is an awesome thing!

This decorated onesie (for the White T-Shirt theme) might be one of my favorite IC projects so far–I love the way the flowers turned out!

And then, inspired by Leap Day, I created a canvas using their Tear It! Tape and embossing powders for accents.

That background is all ink pads and Creative Medium and reminds me of a sunset or sunrise.

In March we switched to two projects a month, and I started to feel like I was getting into the groove of creating for Imagine Crafts.

For Easter I tried out an old technique favorite of mine with some new players. Using white embossing powder as a resist for watercolors is the way I’m used to doing it, but I got to play with their Ink Potion No.9 and it gave me a similar effect using ink pads, instead!

The embossed resist is a great technique in general, but perfect for Easter!

And if you noticed that there was no mention of invitations on Todd’s Luau post, it’s because I was waiting for IC to share how I’d embellished them with their Radiant Neon Amplify! products.

mar2016_jv_amplifiedpartypaper-1

I designed the invitations to look like the classic Hawaii Five-0 dvd covers. (And, yes, I drew the image of Todd.)

Amplify!’d Party Papers

That’s not bad for three months!

On top of that, I managed two art journal spreads…

I saw the background technique on a YouTube video and had to give it a try.

Finally, how about a peek at a project I started Friday night during First Friday at Studio 209?

Work-in-Progress 16x20 canvas

Work-in-Progress 16×20 canvas

This, and three more like it, will be decorating my birthday party at the end of the month. I’d brought the canvas and supplies with my to First Friday because the forecast was rain, rain, and more rain, and that usually means low crowds. So I thought it’d be nice to have something to work on and when folks did stop by my table it was a good conversation starter. I think I’m going to keep doing that!

Between the bathroom renovation, the party, and all of these projects, I think my time was pretty well spent these last three months!

So… what have you been up to? I wanna hear!
