My Year With Helmar

In The Studio

This time last year I was positively over the moon about being accepted onto the Helmar team, and I’ve had a blast working with their products and getting to know my fellow team members. I’ve been invited to stay on for the next six months, too, so who knows what I’ll come up with to share. But today I thought it’d be fun to look back over the projects I’ve created for them over the last 12 months.

Helmar Scrap Dots into Stamps!

I started out my Helmar time with a bit of a bang: using Liquid Scrap Dots to pipe out my own skull stamps to make ribbon to decorate the house with. Still one of my favorites!

Veteran's Day Shadowbox

My next assignment called for a Veteran’s Day project, so I borrowed some service pictures from a friend and made this shadowbox for her.

Thanksgiving Centerpiece for Helmar

Then, suddenly, it was Thanksgiving, and I made a centerpiece for our hall table.

Victorian Ornaments for Helmar

I ventured into glittered territory for my December post, showcasing these Victorian Lady ornaments I made for our Victorian-themed Christmas tree.

King Cake Pillow Boxes

I loved these King Cake Pillow Boxes I designed for my January project. The look almost good enough to eat (and yes, there’s still glitter freaking everywhere!).

Sculpted Fabric Hearts

Using their Fabric Stiffener and Draping Liquid I created some patched fabric hearts and had a lovely time getting nice and messy with it.

Victorian Memo Frame

Then I spruced up an old frame with some fabric, ribbon, and (of course!) for a pretty Victorian Memo Frame.

Accounting Joke Birthday Card

In March I made the most of Todd’s upcoming birthday by making him a very accounting-centric card with real adding machine tape.

Decoupaged Wooden Bunny

Then decoupaged this wooden bunny wall hanging that I’ve had around for ages in time for Easter.

Time To Craft Altered Clock

In April I took advantage of a spare clock laying around and had a little fun with paper and glue.

Pocket Letter & Decorated Envelope

In May I made a pocket letter and decorated envelope for my pen-pal.

Doll Courtyard Diorama

In June I got to show off some of my Dal’s in the courtyard diorama I made from upcycled cardboard and other things around the house.

Drive No Evil Art Car

And I doubt you’ve forgotten my July post, where I painted my own car and sealed it with Helmar Crystal Kote Gloss (that I then needed to disclaim because it wasn’t a tested use… oops!).

Altered Composition Book

After the art car, I toned things down a bit and altered the cover of a composition notebook--a much more traditional project…

Perfect Planner Clips

Made some seasonal paper clips for use with my planner…

Baby Girl Dimensional Baby Card

And crafted a sweet card for a friend’s baby shower (which is today’s post over on the Helmar blog).

And that’s what I’ve created for Helmar over the 12 months! I’m already working on my next project for Helmar to kick off the next 6 months with the team. I have no idea what will come after that, but I know it’ll be creative and fun!

UFOs, Not So ‘U’ Anymore

In The Studio

On Saturday I slept in. And when I awoke, I had this strange sensation of peace and tranquility. And it felt weird as hell!

This was the first weekend in I don’t know how long where I didn’t have completing deadlines weighing me down from the moment my eyes opened. I really didn’t know what to do with myself!

Eventually I decided to take care of some UFOs–Un-Finished Objects–that had piled up on my work table.

It's a little 6" album, but it could use some extender posts already!

I’m on a planner kick (happens around this time every year) and raided my embellishment boxes for stickers to use in decorating my new planner pages (apparently that’s a thing; a thing I can totally get behind). So those got filed into spare scrapbook album I had on the shelf for easy access.

September-December Perfect Planner Paper Clips!

September-December Perfect Planner Paper Clips!

Then I made more of my planner clips (like the ones on today’s Helmar Blog), completing more than enough for the rest of the year. I love all my projects, but I really love how these turned out and that they’re something I can use daily. I like when my crafts are both pretty AND practical.

I love this bag!

I love this bag!

Then, finally, I finished the Conference Tote Sew-Along from So Sew Easy. The last few steps were pushed aside in favor of getting the first Creative Mischief Kits ready to roll, so the unfinished bits were hanging out in the completed shell of the bag. At least it was contained! Now that the bag is finished I’m planning on making it my new everyday-tote in place of my messenger bag that holds way too much.

That doesn’t seem like a bad thing, does it? Unless you’re me and have a tendency to carry a lot of things around “just in case” and your shoulders start to pay!

This bag is big enough to hold my planner, journal, pen pouch, and umbrella with plenty of room leftover. And it has monkeys on it, so, you know: perfect!

And speaking of the kits, the launch went really well, the first few have already made it to their new homes, and I’m now starting on the particulars of the upcoming October release. I also brought them out to the September First Friday and got some really positive feedback.

Of course, today is a holiday, so it’s more kicking around the house with no hard deadlines and later I’ll be grilling up some cheese-stuffed cheeseburgers. I’m looking forward to it!

For my fellow Americans, happy Labor Day! For everyone else, I hope your Monday is as good as it can be.

Finish any languishing projects lately?

What Else I’ve Been Up To

In The Studio

After several months under wraps (hah!) I can finally reveal my secret knitting project:

I pinch! But softly...

I pinch! But only softly…

My friend Alison is expecting her first baby soon and has created a nautical nursery for the little one to come. I don’t usually knit things like blankets (the monotony does not appeal), but baby-sized is different, right? It’s the Anchor and Hearts blanket pattern from Judy’s Knitting Page and was a great project for car trips, Friday night knitting, and keeping my mind and hands busy in waiting rooms. Big Red, there, is The Deadliest Crab courtesy of Knitty.com designer Amber Allison. He was an absolute joy to work up and I was a little sorry to see him go! I hear he was a big hit with the father to be, as well!

In less-secretive project news, I created a dolly diorama inspired by various My Froggy Stuff videos. Seriously, the things she makes out of paperboard, glue, and office paper are really impressive. This diorama is 28″x14″ and more details and in-progress pictures can be found over on the Helmar blog.

It was with a heavy heart that I said farewell to the Gauche Alchemy team this month. After three years it seemed a good time to bow out and make room for some fresh faces over there, but I’ll miss the behind the scenes hi-jinks and being in the know about what’s coming next.

The Love My Fabrics team also came to a close in May at the choice of the company owner, and my last projects over there were a quilted hot air balloon wall hanging and the outfits you see the dolls wearing, above. I hope the fabrics are still available on etsy as they really are great for sewing for dolls with!

Up Up and Away!

Up Up and Away!

Finally, I was interviewed over on Paint is Thicker Than Water yesterday. Last fall I contributed to the Monster Chores coloring book collaboration, and Jennyann is kind enough to shine the spotlight on each of the contributors over the course of this year. It was a fun project to work on (the monsters are doing the opposite of the chores they are assigned) and you can sign up for Jennyann’s mailing list to receive a copy (though I think the link for that may be down at the moment–she’s in the process of shifting some things around on her site). As part of the interview I also shared some images of commissions I’ve completed over the last little while, some that have yet to make it to my portfolio site just yet, so that was fun to share, too.

Well, now that I’m down to only 1 design team and the store’s not going to be taking up all my time, whatever will I do?

Like I ever have to worry about running out of projects!

Helmar Share: Veterans Day Shadowbox

In The Studio

I’ve got my second project up over at the Helmar blog today getting creative with another one of their fabulous adhesives. This time around I’m highlighting ZapDots: 3D Double-Sided Adhesives that come in different sizes as well as in black, white, and clear. I took one look at the black ZapDots and knew they’d be just perfect for creating shadowboxes!

This shadowbox is in honor of my friend, Lyssa’s, military service. With Veterans Day/Remembrance Day just next week, it’s a quick project you can put together to honor a current or former service member. Click over to see how it came together: Shadow Box of Service
